In China, cats and dogs are kept in appalling condition and then used for human consumption. Not only that, sometimes they are even ‘prepared’ whilst still alive, apparently to improve the taste.

I have been following Animals Asia http://www.animalsasia.org/ which is a charity based organisation fighting for animals rights in Asia. Primarily, they recover Moon Bears from horrific bile farms and provide a safe environment for the last few years of their life. They educate local people and officials and are part of the drafting of laws to protect animals in the region.

They also use rescued dogs as embassadors under the name or Dr. Dog to visit people with special needs, children and others to try to change the culture and educate people on what a valuable resource being in the company of dogs is. They are also lobbying law changes for greyhound racing in the Phillipines.

I hope you visit the website and find Animals Asia of interest and see the different ways in which you can help the defence of wildlife and companion animals alike.

Most people know that dogs, whether tethered or not, travelling on the back of utes is illegal but recently the law has been updated to cover the general restraining of dogs travelling in cars.

I checked what specifically needs to be done with the RSPCA to avoid penalty and of course the safety of the dog.

Firstly, dogs can no longer be transported in the front passenger seat, let alone on your lap whilst driving. If you were to crash the impact of the airbag on your dogs head is so great it would instantly kill her/him.

Secondly, dogs can only be transported restrained on the back seat or back of the car, not back of utes.

Here are a few ways of restraining your dog effectively and safely – crates, barriers, harnesses and straps that plug directly into your existing seat-belt plug.

Petmates has safe and secure custom designed crates in the rear covered area on my ute. Some clients are too scared to use this facility so are restrained with harnesses and connected to the seat belt plug on the back seat.

FACTS

Each year thousands of animals are injured, die or become needlessly lost in car accidents. Reasons:

Your dog could distract you and cause an accident.

If you were involved in an accident, your dog could escape from the car and become lost.

Unrestrained dogs become flying missiles in car accidents and could be seriously injured or needlessly die if loose in your vehicle, as well as injuring you.

It doesn’t have to be! Please be safe, be aware, be educated; and help educate and bring awareness to others.

For example, bacteria from infected mouths containing rotten teeth get into the bloodstream causing problems for the pets kidney, sometimes resulting in kidney disease.

Thus dental care is extremely important. Here is another related article: http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewContent.act?clipid=442660487&mode=cnc&tag=3.5413?icx_id%3D196992

A large number of fleas and flea problems have increased this season in the northern beaches area. The particularly wet and humid conditions we’ve been experiencing this season has been perfect for flea eggs (which can lay dormant for years) to hatch, increasing the number from last year. As hopefully you know, these conditions are also perfect for ticks which again, have had a bumper year. I have had many cat and dog clients really struggling to combat these persistent pests.

Here are some flea factsheets and advice from Pittwater Animal Hospital which I hope you find useful:
